very large, red calf!
Juness had her calf with her with the herd this noon when I went out to worm the goat herd. They were right there and Juness was very attentive to the baby. I went over, took one look at the head, a glance and the butt (it was lying down) and the size and thought...well, I've got a healthy bull calf for Laurie. Picked up the hind leg and was very pleased to find out that......
It's a heifer! Yay! That makes two heifers and a bull calf thus far for Jason.
Here is Juness with her baby and Gadget there to her left.
We think Loren stole Gadget's bull calf and that is why it didn't make it. Loren is due July 24th (we hope) and had starting sacking up slightly. Well, about the time the bull calf was found her right rear quarter was huge, as though it had been nursed. Yesterday when Juness was wandering the fields searching for her misplaced calf, I got a good look at Loren and she was dripping milk. She is nowhere near sacked up to where she would naturally be dripping milk. Since the bull calf did not get colostrum from momma and Loren didn't really have much to give we figure that is why we lost him.
Juness, however, fed her calf right away.
The calf will be brought in this evening during evening milking. Juness was milked last night but didn't let down much (surprise, surprise).
Frida's heifer still does not have a name. We need to decide what the theme will be for naming his offspring. Each herd bull has had a theme, related to his breed or name and then heifers are named in alphabetical order. Well, except for Xena out of Londonderry and Space Cadet Toby(S.C.) out of El Tigre.
