Around here I know it's given to beef cattle during the winter months, not sure about the summer months. I suspect it's because it would be extra carbs for energy and that cattle molasses has sulpher, unlike store bought molasses.
Our beet pulp has added molasses and I give that year round..so I'd like to know more about it myself.
I give it after calving and during illnesses when the cow needs a boost because she isn't eating or drinking well. I've also top-dressed her grain with it when she isn't eating much during a protracted illness.
