UPDATE: She's confirmed open!! Couldn't stand waiting any longer, so took her into the vet this morning- he confirmed her open!
I get milk today!
He said she is only the 3rd cow he has ever seen do this (and he is the main vet for the local commercial dairies) and the other two cows were virgin cows!
He said it's just something stimulating their pituitary glands and causing their bodies to think they are in calf- (oxytocin-but why with no calf? who knows?)
If I could figure it out, I bet it be worth gold! Regardless, it's worth gold to me, (bummed there is no calf) but SO HAPPY to get milk early!
I have lurked and learned from this forum for two years (since we first got our Jersey) and just now joined because I am so shocked that I need feedback....
My 4 yr old Jersey cow, Bonnie, is BACK IN MILK after 15 mo dried off!!!
She was preg checked OPEN in January after being AI'd in August and live covered by a Hereford in September...
She didn't take when we live covered her with an Angus bull in Sept of 09 and she dried up shortly after that- so dried off since Dec of 09!!
Has anyone heard of this happening? Our vet is so curious he is coming out to preg check her again for free (a 35 mi ranch call)...
Bonnie's calf from 09, a Jersey/Angus cross, Chino, is due with her first calf at the end of April (we AI'd with Jersey semen and live covered both cows at the same time) and is doing great...
Our vet said if she is not pregnant to go ahead and milk her again- anyone done this successfully?
99.9% sure that Chino was not nursing off of Bonnie...Bonnie's bag was VERY flat and saggy (normal dried off condition) until I noticed this morning that she looked fuller and more bagged up-
Caught her, massaged her a bit, milked her and GOT MILK!!
I am just flabbergasted!!
Feedback?
PS- hello everyone! Glad to officially be able to say HI! I actually tried to join a few times but my computer kept booting me off the forum...just got a new computer, now I can say Hello!
