Hello!
Well.....we're new to milking and just purchased our first family cow almost a week ago! We've learned so much in this first week......but we're really not sure just how well we're doing. Our cow is a Jersey ($750)........she's young, only 2yo and has had 1 calf. Her teats, especially the front ones, are small and we're wondering if this is what is causing us to take up to 2 hours to get her milked? So far we've worked up to getting 1 gal. and a qt. of milk from her a day. For being so young, she's really so sweet and has been very patient with us.........she doesn't kick and only shifts her weight between legs every now and then. And for our long 2hr milking sessions, we find that to be completely incredible! She was said to have come from a dairy that had to close their doors......other than that we don't have much info. on her. We're hoping that as we milk her more her teats will become easier for us to grasp? And that as she is with us longer that her milk supply will increase? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
I'm concerned that even after our 2hr mark that she still may have a little milk still and is not completely stripped out........but we're pooped out and so is Buttercup! We'll be so glad when we get ourselves broken in to this.
What a whirl wind week it has been for us......my husband quickly built a stanchion on Sat. (from the instructions in KFC) and my husband daughter and I have all been taking turns with the different milking sessions. Oh boy, do we all have sore hands! Thanks so much for this website, we've learned so much from it!
