YAY! Molly just calved about 15 min ago! She had a tiny little all black heifer calf! Wish I would've been taking bets-everyone was so sure it'd be red! Molly was eating fine this am, no slime, but I KNEW she was close-her bag was full, and I was SURE she was bred as soon as the bull was put in (Mom argued she saw her bred later, but I'm pretty sure that was Dolly). Anyways, I didn't think it'd be today, but I was out playing with Jesse and doing some chores and I heard a cow bellow-you know, that "I'm distressed" bellow...I went to check, and she was getting up, laying down-something was out, but it didn't seem right....Checked, sure enough, one foot was turned back! One was right out, and so was a good part of the muzzle, her tongue was hanging out-wasn't sure the calf was even alive. Called Hubby and he ran right home. He got that foot turned right and Molly pushed her out like nothing! Tiny baby-about 40 lbs, I'd guess, and black as coal. Here's some pix, 10 min after she was born.
I don't think Molly was in labour long, but as Hubby said, it was a good thing I noticed when I did-she wouldn't have had any trouble w/o that foot being back, but the way it was-we could have lost the calf! I HAD wanted a bull, 'cause I didn't want to get attached and have to sell it....isn't that the way it goes!! Molly was such a good girl-it's like she knew we were trying to help. I would've liked to rub it in to Hubby, seeing as his "quiet" hereford tried to kill me when I went to help him pull her calf, but as he was helping me, I decided silence was probably smarter, LOL!
