I went to bed early last night about 8ish, I just felt so tired. I went to the barn and read for a while, brushed Bhumi, gave her a hug and went to sleep. It rained hard for some time and I couldnt hear a thing with a tin roof 4 ft over my head! I thought "guess I couldnt hear her even if she does go into labor". I went to sleep and at around 1 a.m. I woke up, not able to go back to sleep. I went pee, got another blanket because the temp dropped, but to no avail no sleep would come. Bhumi was fine, chewing cud...... So I lit my lamps, read some more and heard Bhumi get up, and go down and over and over. She was REALLY restless. That got me up. I went down to her and she calmed down a lot. She lay down and had a big contraction! Here we go!!!! I thought "o.K. I will get out of her way", so I went to the loft and she jumped up and paced around and around the loft and then went looking for me outside! I went back down to see what she would do and she came back into the barn and wrapped her neck around me and chewed cud while I brushed her. She would have a contraction and moo baby moo's and lick me! Then she would lay down and have another contraction. This went on until 3:45 a.m. I kept trying to leave her alone and she would hunt me down and then want me by her side brushing or scratching. I found out recently when I assisted my best friend with her birth that by tracing the back of the fingernails over the back and spine that a laboring mothers body will release so much endorphins that even morphine coudnt touch the potency of it. The midwife told me that endorphins are 400 times stronger than morphine. so my friend wouldnt let me stop while she labored for hours, she said it helped her so much! In essence I guess that was what was happening with Bhumi. She would get so meditative while I brushed her that if I stopped she would start pacing and looking upset. as long as I brushed she relaxed and chewed cud and labored. it was such a cool experience. I heard her water burst and then about 10 minutes later she had a big contraction that brought the amniotic sack down and I could see a peep of 2 little hooves. She would push only every once in a while and moo in between. Finally at around 4:50 she layed down again and pushed hard ( before the calf was in and out in and out....) The feet to the ankles came out and she pushed 3 more times with no result. I took the little feet in my hands and just held them to keep the calf from sliding back in. Bhumi seemed to dig that because she then pushed REAL hard with a big groan and I just held a bit of traction until the face appeared, but since Bhumi decided to lie down with her butt up against the retaining wall, I ended up holding the calf up over the rocks so it could come out. I tried to let it do it by itself but it was forhead on a big rock and wasnt budging. When it got to its waist I let go and got a towel for its face and started talking softly to it. Mama was mooing softly and she laid there for a minute after it came all the way out. She got up and started to lick her big BULL calf! He is so handsome!!!! Anyways she would lick him then me and back and forth!. He started up fast and sat up within a few minutes. I had called the house at 3:45 and my 10 year old son came to the barn quietly and sat in the loft like a mouse and watched the whole thing! So far he has nursed all 4 quarters, fell asleep in each of our laps and Bhumi licks each one of us and baby moo's at us. She lies down in the middle of my family with her baby and looks peaceful! She has not passed the placenta as of 8:30 a.m. She has pooped peed and eaten and I have not seen baby go yet. Wow, busy morn and I am starving hungry. I will post pics later this afternoon. A beautiful Sunday it is!!!!
