Pyle had so much trouble reaching Dolly and Fancy that I had never even considered the possiblity that he might actually manage to reach SIDNEY who has grown quite a bit in the past few months. I haven't measured her lately, but I would guess her at about 51"-52", she's long-legged.
Sidney is sold, purchased by the gentleman who is buying our property. He wanted her AI'd to a Standard Jersey.
I knew that I hadn't noticed her in heat lately, but didn't think much of it since she has "silent" heats, her only indication of heat was nothing more than a bit a clear discharge. Her "silent" heats were the main reason for deciding to "synch" her for a timed insemination.
I had started the Ov-Synch protocol on her last week -- inserted a CIDR and gave her a shot of GnRH. When her week was up, I removed the CIDR and noticed GREEN discharge on it (normal with the CIDR would be clear, cloudy, white, or yellow), so before giving the shot of Lutalyse, I palpated her -- and I'm pretty sure that she's already pregnant!
I have no idea how Pyle managed to reach her when he couldn't reach Dolly and Fancy in that pen -- obviously, Sidney was more "helpful" than Dolly and Fancy! I never once saw that little bull pay any attention to her -- she had to have been in and out of heat overnight.
Right this minute, I'm in a motel room in Clarksville, Tennessee, on my way to the property in Florida -- spending a week there right now and hiring a couple of teenagers to clear a corner out of the palmetto, will allow me to move with the cows a full 2 months sooner. I'll be able to move the first weekend in February. (yep, I'm real upset about being forced out of frozen Nebraska to come down and spend a week in the blessed warmth)
I snagged hubby's labtop this trip, but we don't have phone service at the house yet. Hopefully, I can get the phone turned on while I'm there -- otherwise, this is it until the 15th.
I'll draw blood on Sidney when I get back to make sure 100% that she is pregnant, but her left uterine horn is 3 times the size of the right. Somewhere in the range of 30 - 45 days.
I sure hope her new owner isn't too upset about having a Pyle calf -- guess I'll have to explain to him that any calf is better than no calf! And besides, if it's a heifer, if I don't buy it from him, I'd be willing to bet that I can find someone who will -- it will be a Halfblood Miniature Jersey.
