The subject says it all!! I much prefer to read about these cow health problems in cow books, rather than have a crash course in dealing with them
Mastitis is setting in in Gloria's crook quarter You did warn me Joann, as did the Vet. Gloria lost the teat drain overnight. I think she licked it out as the wound didn't have so much as a piece of straw on it this morning. The quarter was beautiful and soft still. So I milked her out, being 100 % sure that I got every drop. Afterwards I applied some Penalone - Intramammary as instructions from the Vet. But, late this afternoon when I brought her in from pasture the quarter is hard but not hot as yet, nor was the milk stringy like I've heard you guys talk about. I could only get 1 litre of milk compared to 2 litres this morning.
Gerry's picking up more teat drains tonight and I'll put it in when I put the calves on, strip her out by hand and take the drain out again until the next time I milk her. Of course I'll be milking her as often as I possibly can to try to rid her of this horrible illness!! I'll also go and have a look in the Tree of Knowledge at the different natural brews in which to apply to her udder.
Tell me, does the mastitis usually make the cow appear really miserable? I'm not sure if it's mastitis or a relapse of her post calving state.
Gloria did graze for most of the time she was out on pasture today but tonight I can see that she's miserable again. As insurance I've given her another drench of Calol (cal/mag.) and left her with alfalfa and more molasses. I have kept up giving her heaps of molasses, like at least 2 lb per day, since calving as well as the Kick Start brew that I got from the Vet.
Should I expect her to have a temperature with this mastitis or not? I haven't taken it as yet but will do so on my next trip down to see her.
So guys, please keep sending good vibes for my wee sweetie She's been so well behaved throughout this whole terrible ordeal.
