Somebody thinks I'm starving my "calves"!
I was so taken by surprise that I took him right down into the pen so that he could see them all up close, see that they're Miniature cattle not little calves, and feel their flesh condition, I showed him my supply of feed and hay, and I didn't even get his name -- which is exactly what I tell people NOT to do in that situation!
Anyway, he was satisfied that nobody is in danger of starving to death, that they're just Miniature Jerseys. He did seem surprised when I pointed out that our vet was due to be here this afternoon for vaccinations, and told him who our vet is.
Then when the vet was here a couple of hours later, I had to ask him if he thought any of the cows were too thin. He said no, he thought they were all in good flesh, then I told him about my visit this morning.
He wanted to know which deputy it was that came out and was going to "call him and set him straight", but of course, I didn't know which deputy it was. Then he told me that HE is the vet that our county calls in to investigate large animal cruelty cases!!!!! And as far as he's concerned, I don't have a thing to worry about.
He also told me that there have been a rash of calls recently, and that we seem to have a new PETA group operating in the area.
He even got a call recently from a PETA person in VIRGINIA upset with him for his statements that got a local horse cruelty case dropped (the horses weren't being mistreated, they were old and toothless, and he didn't think it was anybody's place to force the folks into putting the horses down, they were thin but not suffering).
Anyway, the deputy seemed fine with things when he left, and I have my wonderful vet to back to me up that Jerseys not only shouldn't look like beef cattle, but that these particular Miniature Jerseys are getting everything they need.
Some people, they should try spending their time doing something constructive! Like shoveling manure!
