*calf has a very low belly, ribs protruding and hollow in front of the hips, like all the guts went south.
O.k my wife and I keep sheep, I added some bucket calves (5) to the group just a way to make use of all the pasture. This was in prep for some dexter's in the future. So Thursday night when doing feeding I noticed one calf had a very low belly, ribs protruding and hollow in front of the hips, like all the guts went south.
Current condition: calf (45 days old) is standing, sometimes stretching, separated from group in a stall, will bottle feed, will not eat starter, peculiar smell (urine syrup?) penis enlarged, umbilical enlarged, feces good- brown solid, very tight at belly, feeding scours/milk meds in bottle
What I did: Calf was being weaned and eating starter, I opened a new pasture (Sat) and allowed the animals into it. Grass was tall in the pasture- no mowing since the beginning of the summer (its Dec) I noticed animals were grazing it.(Sun-Thurs) Note calves did have available pasture before the new pasture, just the grass was much shorter because the sheep had kept it down. I believe this calf was getting his full. (Thursday night problem) Closed off new pasture kicked myself for giving the calves such access, put the little guy in a pen and began bottle feeding him like he's got scours. (Friday) looked bad felt his belly for problems -thought urine problem, not scours because fecal movement solid. Continued on scours treatment because of energy and absorption of dextrose high) Sat- looks a little better penis wet, nose a little wet. I've been searching the internet like a hawk, His penis is enlarged and the umbilical area is enlarged like it has a hernia but nothing like pictures I see on the internet.
What should I do.
