Just wanted to say that this is a thread that I am really enjoying. As a new member it's great to see all the different opinions and aspects brought up that I would not have thought of. I would like to say this. Not everyone wants to go fresh, raw or organic. To me, that sounds crazy. But I have family (sisters) who won't touch the raw milk, fresh butter or cheeses my mother provides, nor will their kids and husbands. I LOVE the fact that my mother shares with me and that I now have a heifer of my own. Granted, it will be years before I get milk from her, but it's a step in the right direction. As for the rest, we raise gardens to feed ourselves. At the end of the month I'm ordering 25 broilers. When they've grown enough I will have to process them and put them up. Then...I'll do it again. I don't enjoy it, but it is the price I am willing to pay to know I have fresh, clean meat to feed my family.
We all are doing something we don't like to do because it's something we know will better the quality of life for our families. That something is different for all of us. I am thankful to find others who are concerned about the same things I am, that want to have better for our families. We may all not agree on the "how to get there" but I think we all agree that we do the best we can with what we have.
I'm fairly poor. Have a mortgage, furniture is given to me from family. I have slept on a couch instead of a bed for over a year. But... I had a small garden last year and am planning a bigger one this year. I have roosters to slaughter in the next week, rabbits having litters that will later become meals, hens laying eggs. I don't have much in the way of material wealth, but am rich in knowing I am providing the best I can. These are MY priorities.
Thanks again for the lively conversation.
