This thread was originally posted on June 10th, 2005. By request I went ahead and copied it to post here. Freya went on to calve with a heifer calf(Circe) out of Jason on August 13, 2005.
I finally got the photos. They aren't all that good though. Stormy weather darkens everything and my digital camera (despite how pricey it was) isn't the best in lack of light areas.
The cow I chose to use is Freya (3/4 Jersey, 1/4 Norwegian Red). We are going on the assumption she is due August 18th to Jason. There is a chance she is due July 1st to either Morgan (1J480) or Jason. But her fetus and her twin sister's fetus (who is due July 1st) were not the same size. Her calf, now, is acting like a seventh month fetus as opposed to an eight and a half month fetus. In any case, she is going dry within the coming week.
These two photos show the area I look in. This is her right side. It is outlined in blue and in one picture I have drawn blue lines along where her rib cage is.
Ignore the blue "X." I put it there and then looked and realized it was off. The fluorescent green "X" is where I look first when I bump. If I don't find the calf I move down to where the yellow "X" is. Usually, you can tell where you need to move after that. Sometimes the calf is even resting along the under belly and you need to drop down even further.
This was where I checked first. I am not pushing in with my fingers. I am pushing in with the palm of my hand and using quite a bit of pressure. I push in and up slightly. If the calf isn't immediately available and is just out of reach, I'll do some quick bumps to get everything sloshing around a bit (similar to what Ann described.
In the first shot, I am not pushing in. My hand is resting on her side. In the second shot I am pushing in. Notice I have moved from the above shot. Her calf ended up being to the left even more so and down a little.
