Greetings Folks!
I have asked some questions of you dear people before and I am very thankful for all your knowledge. I have some dumb questions to ask. Please bear with me.
We purchased a Dexter bull calf and an unrelated Dexter/Mini-Jersey heifer about 2 1/2 years ago when they were about 6-7 months old. We believe the heifer came into heat around Feb, 2008 and the bull kept trying to breed her. This went on for months. It appeared that she never was in standing heat. The bull started to get very aggressive so we decided to send him to freezer camp. Colleen (the heifer) has continuously tried to mount all male animals so we just assumed that she was in heat and that was why she was behaving this way. Over the last few months she has been getting much more friendly. We have been able to halter her, and even lead her by a rope. This was unheard of 6 months ago. She has always been difficult. She is really getting quite large on both her sides and she waddles when she walks. Also we have noticed some mucus draining out of her vulva. My daughter has been working on handling her udders so that when and if she should ever have a calf we can milk her. Well, her udders are a bit enlarged and she is able to milk out a bit of opague liquid. The bag seems to be filling up with some fluid. Overall she is happy and healthy. Eating well, grazing well and does not appear sick. I know it is hard to tell if she is pregnant but what do you all think? Should I start to prepare for a calf? I have had five children myself, also had goats that kidded last year with twins each so I am not a complete novice but I just thought I would run this by you more experienced folks and see what you thought.
We do have a cow Vet if we need to call him but Colleen has been very healthy overall.
I will try to post some pictures if I can.
