I'm nervous posting this, because there are lots of details to be worked out still. But I am amazed and stunned at God's mercy and blessing towards me and I want to share.
The wonderful dairyman (and his wife) from whom we bought Daisy have become friends of ours. They were here this week having lunch with us and looking at Izzybell. By the way--he was amazed at her size and confirmation. He said that she was the size of an average Holstein heifer! If we ever want to get rid of her (we don't ;D ), he would take her. That was so nice to learn--that God blessed us not only with a heifer, but a very good heifer.
Anyway, he has a cow in his dairy that calved in with only 2 quarters working (though she was still giving around 4 gallons a day from those 2 quarters). She is a bit difficult with the milking machine, because those machines have 4 suction cups and you can't get a good seal. She is due to calve soon, so her lactation is up in maybe 2-4 months-we aren't sure yet. BUT he offered for us to just borrow her and milk her til she needs to be dried off!!!
Isn't that amazing? I am just stunned. And I'm so excited that I can't stand it. We still have to meet her and see how well she does with hand milking. There are a lot of things to still figure out, but it might really happen. We only milked Daisy for 6 weeks before we dried her off. I froze around 45 or so gallons of milk (plus butter and cheese) before we dried her off, and we are STILL drinking the milk. Can you imagine how much I could freeze from this cow!?
Please say a prayer for this to work, but also that God's will be done. We are supposed to go to their house Thursday for milking and to have dinner with them. We'll meet the cow (her name is Sweetheart) then and see if it will actually work out.
In the meantime, I've started a "cow fund" in our budget! I'm trying to save like crazy to get another milking cow. ;D
