I called the cows up this afternoon. When Belle didn't come with them, again, I went to find her. Found her down and it appears that she has developed the BLV tumor on her spine. Her back legs appeared to be dragging as she tried to stand. She was sitting on them in a frog like position.
I took her water, called the vet, who confirmed what I feared. In addition, it appeared her rectum was protruding slightly, causing her to not be able to poop.
I don't know how long she had been there. I got home after dark last night, so could have been a while.
Since DH was gone and I wouldn't have asked him to do it anyway, I called our neighbor, who is a hunter, and asked him to put her down. My heart is heavy for she was such a peach of a girl. Gentle, loving, everything you could want in a family cow.
For those who may remember the story, my dad died in 2001. when I began searching for a cow in early 2005, I kept talking out loud to my dad asking where are you when I need you. I was trying to decide between a straight beef cow or a Jersey. He finally answered me in a dream I had one night and told me to buy the Jersey. He pointed at her and she walked up and licked my hand.
When I went to the buyer, he showed me three cows and the last one walked up to each of us then right up to me and stood right in front of me just looking at me. I know without a doubt my dad picked her out.
So now I'm asking dad why he picked out one that would die so soon. I already know the answer. He wanted her to teach me all that she did.
RIP Belle, you were loved tremendously.
