the other thread was getting long...
Rori is the same today. her appetite might be a tad bit better, she cleaned her trough when i fed her the soak & grain this morning. I gave her some shots and milked her, though Jocelyn is taking pretty good care of her daily 4 gallons. the air is just as bad as yesterday under her skin all over her left side. the trocar wound is all but healed.
to make matters worse, Nimue's udder lesions have a smell again. i was so mad when i smelled it! i admit with Rori near- death i havent been as vigilant about Nimue's issue. but seriously, why does life have to kick me when i am down? so i took a bucket of hot, soapy bleach water and scrubbed the heck out of her lesions. i scrubbed hard and thoroughly and then (WARNING! GROSS OUT!) i peeled off all the scabs. then i scrubbed again. after that i dried it as dry as i could with nice clean towels and applied raw honey all over it. i feel good about this, but we will see this evening whether or not it helped.
also because of Rori's issues i have had both cows loose with both calves and so you can imagine how little milk i am getting from Nimue. i got a gallon this morning! (that is not a lot from a cow who is giving 6 gallons/ day) she is seriously holding up and i have been unable to devise a plan to stick to until today. today i decided to milk Nimue 2x a day and bring her to the calves right after milking for 20 minutes or so, then separate again. if this doesnt work i will stop bringing her at all and simply bucket feed the calves. Rori throws a (hopefully) temporary wrench in this because i want her with her calf, but for now i am penning her with the calves and leaving Nimue out to graze. does this make sense? in the long run, if Rori lives, i will take her calf away again. but right now i want Rori to have her babe and i cant drink her milk anyway.
the reason i am attempting to let the calves suck from Nim after miking is that i am not confident i can milk her out completely. the milker doesnt fit her well and it is really hard to get her empty. otherwise i would skip that step and bucket feed the calves right away.
anyway i want to thank you all for helping me with Rori (and Nim). Rori is still trying and doesnt seem to be near death right now. part of that may be the Banamine.
