I fear I'm not milking Molly out often enough. She received LA 200 from the vet but I'm not sure how long I should continue treating her. I bought Biomycin yesterday. I haven't yet dosed her with it. I have penicillin, is one better than the other? I'd been treating the one quarter with AmoxiMast but ran out of that. I've been using about a quarter cup of olive oil, drizzling vit. E oil in that and adding about 10 drops of tea tree oil and applying that to her teats. It's worked really well with the peeling and irritation. I do this after her calf has nursed but before I milk. She's much more accepting of milking with this as there's not as much friction. I'd put her on brome hay to try to reduce her milk which helped, and flip-flopped thinking that I don't want to hurt her condition by feeding too little protein so yesterday I fed her alfalfa again and this morning her udder was HUGE! So, I figure I will feed her free choice brome and she'll get alfalfa when she comes in for milking. I have Right Now Onyx mineral out and I add kelp half and half. She does not consume much but I just got this in after I'd sold her so she's not used to it. I actually think it might have kelp but I haven't read the ingredients list. I also got some EdemaMint but do I use that and massage the udder before milking or after?
The left rear quarter is hot and fairly hard but the milk appears to be normal (I haven't gotten the CMT - no one has it locally and the place I'd called somewhat nearby never did return my call) and I'm putting her calf on that quarter first and allowing her to drink her fill. The left front quarter is hot and hard and is the one with the laceration. I get a few squirts of coagulated junk and then about 2 cups of milk. It does take awhile to refill but is much better than it was initially.
I've never had to deal with mastitis before let alone mastitis AND injury! Molly's Mastitis cream or whatever it's called should be here Monday. Any other ideas as to 'routine' and such? I'm at a loss as to what to expect, what to continue to do, how long I can expect to have to 'work' on getting her udder back up to standards. When do I decide it's best to dry her off? Can I dry off the quarter with any hope of it coming back 100% with the next calf? I really do not want to lose this quarter.
