i promise my knickers arent twisted, but i have to say i doubt that anyone could prove your patient lost her child to raw milk. as a woman who has been pregnant for years, i must say Listeria is in everything, mostly salad bars and lunch meat. smoked salmon, canned garlic... hot dogs. the list is too great to imagine. and i agree that that risk is real. (this is why i milk my own cow and dont drink unknown, storebought raw milk)like was available when i lived in california)
Listeria infection in pregnant women is 'scary' because much of the medical community views pregnancy as a condition of compromised immunity. if i experienced, pregnant or not, a condition of compromised immunity i would indeed be very careful what i exposed myself to (especially commercially processed foods). however, a lot of folks dont look at pregnancy that way, including myself. i do not believe pregnant women or their unborn are more weak, i believe they need more vital foods and nutrition, and when that isnt available immune weakness can result which can cause susceptibility to illness that might not normally get them. this is true for everyone, and those with compromised health should seek to increase their gut health and immunity.
there have been times in my life where i was ignorant of healthy living where i would have been an excellent 'mark' for food borne illness. i am so grateful for our healthy lifestyle! it helps a mother sleep at night.
i also have to add that my youngest has a complete lactose intolerance that makes only raw and cultured milk safe for him. without it, he would be on fortified soymilk and other non-foods. i would he seem healthy? perhaps. but i know from experience that 'dead' milk products make him so ill we traveled all over the state searching for medical answers.
