My 7 year old jersey is due the second week of May. I realized I need to have everything ready so I should order stuff now. This is Daisy, the cow who went down with MF after calving last year and it was a whole dramatic week of not knowing if she'd pull through. I didn't have a vet, just a very kind person that knew a whole lot more than I did and taught me how to IV. This year I'm determined to be more prepared. I may have found a vet that would come, knowing how far I am from them it would surely be very $$ but I've heard that they're really good from a couple different people. I have to call them and see if they'll add me as a client and if they'd be willing to write any prescriptions without making a trip all the way here. Anyway, I now know how to give stuff subq or IV so I'm a little better off this year.
I'm planning on ordering Bovicalc, I considered the X-zelit stuff but she's such a picky girl I really think I'd be wasting money. She won't eat her grain if ANYTHING is in it. Even FasTrack throws her off. It's exasperating.
I have FasTrack, as I mentioned it's always a gamble whether or not she'll eat it.
I have lots of calcium and dextrose on hand, with an IV kit. I do need to get some more needles, what's the recommended size for IV or subq?
I have ketogel, and quick response gel (kinda the same thing, she hates them both and it's a party getting them in her).
The only other thing that I think could be helpful is CMPK IV, so I'll be seeing if the vet could write that for me to order from valley vet or something.
I have a hip lift on hand this time, so I won't be having to drive an hour and a half round trip to borrow one.
What else should I have? I've read about some other fresh cow transition supplements, are there any that anyone can recommend or is Bovicalc pretty good?
I've been thinking about last year a lot, and I think I may have been slacking in the weeks before she calved. I don't remember if I had upped her grain enough by calving time, so that may have contributed. I'm paying more attention this time. Last year she went a week overdue, I'm thinking she'll probably be similar this time? Should I get her up to her full grain amount by her due date or assume she'll be late and up it later?
This cow is a very special cow and I'm terrified of loosing her. Depending on how this calving goes I may not breed her back again. I want to be as prepared as possible because right now I'm just stressing about all the what-ifs.
