Yesterday my supplier of whiteface calves arrived out unexpectantly with a bull calf for Lizzie ;D Last week he accidently sold all the bull calves and I missed out on one I had ordered, so he gave me two heifers to sup up the extra milk I had. He was still feeling bad in case I had a tougher job getting Lizzie to accept a new calf this late after calving.
But, she's not too bad with the new one, who my partner named 'Bart'. She actually likes Bart better than Sparky. Will get a pic when they settle down and I have free hands whilst they feed
We had a bit of a performance last night when I got Sparky's lips firmly planted on her back teats but she settled down OK in the end.
Lizzie gave me a darned good boot on the leg the day before yesterday at milking time and had a bloody discharge yesterday. Could she possibly be in heat less than two weeks after calving?
John (calf supplier) enjoyed a look around the farm and especially seeing the size of the calves that are mothered onto Jersey cows Plus seeing last years calves who are all now much bigger than my biggest Jersey cow who is running with them. He doesn't get to see what type of animal these whiteface calves grow into for us smallholders. He is one of NZ's most respected Dairy Judges (a definite Holstein man tho.)and I had to laugh when he crouched down to inspect all the cows udders ;D All are in very good shape and shouldn't give me any trouble for years he informs me!
He thought Maggie was a 'superb example' of a Jersey calf and advised hanging onto her for breeding at all costs. He left today for a tour of Holstein Dairy farms in Canada, lucky man!
