Had a nightmare of an evening last night. We were in need of more hay, as all we had was a high alfalfa content hay, ran out of the grass mix. I never really have problems with Fea or Lady as far as bloating, but Belinda is tricky, sometimes she does fine, others not so good. Well, the night before last, she was blotated when I brought her in for milking, so I tied a stick in her mouth, which always seems to work pretty good. Yesterday morning and afternoon she was good, no bloating.
Well, last night, we decided to go and eat somewhere, shich we rarely do. My husband just happened to notice Belinda laying by the shed, struggling to get up, and this is when we were heading down the driveway. So, we immediately backed up, and ran to see what was going on. She was BLOATED so huge!!! I just knew she was going to die if we didn't do something quick. We got her into the stanchion, put the stick in her mouth, but she wouldn't even chew she was so bad. Her eyes were huge and she was SO scared. She was trying to bend her back in funny ways, trying to make the pain stop I am sure. She went don once, but managed to get back up. I was trying to get a stomach tube down her throat, but she wouldn't swallow it, and I couldn't get it down. I was totally freaked out, and yelled that we were going to have to poke a hole in her, just as my husband was headed to the house on the run for a knife, she went down again, in the stanchion! She was choking, and I unlocked the headgate and managed to somehow get her head out, and tried to get her up, but she couldn't. I was SO scared! My husband made it back, and we somehow got her standing again. At that time she did expell some of the gas, and I decided to wait another minute or so and see if she would start releasing more before I stuck her. We got her out of the milkshed, and forced her to walk, and miracle of miracles, she started passing gas out of both ends. We walked here for about 45 minutes, and she was looking pretty good, and decided she wanted to eat the grass in the field! So, I knew the worst was past. I am so thankful for God's grace, I was praying the whole time and the Lord answered. Praise God!
Anyways, I NEVER want to deal with that again. I ordered therabloat and some other bloat stuff, as well as a bloat trocar this morning. I will definately be very careful about the ammount of alfalfa she gets from now on. As I said, she is the only one who is so sensative like this. Please be careful!
