not a fight between two of the girls. A fight between me and one of them! I had some paint cans stored out in one edge of the barn and decided to bring them into the house this morning. Abby (9 months old and getting full of herself...also the ONLY one with horns..those will be coming off this fall. They were too big to burn when I got her. My vet won't take them off til after the heat & flies are gone in fall) & Sally Goodin were looking at the cans I'd sat on the ground as I finished up in the barn. I reached to pick them up and head to the house. Abby obivously wasn't finished looking at the cans and tried to hit one of out of my hand. Didn't think much of it and headed on to the house. She followed me and HORNED me (swinging head) on my hip. ON PURPOSE! I swung round and clobbered her (gently for fear of busting open my paint LOL) yelled at her to stop and turned to head onto the house. She waited a second and came after me again (I could see her the shadow she was casting) She was coming hard, head sort of down. I dropped my paint, spun around, grabbed her by the halter-screaming lots of things I can't put here . With the halter I drug her in spinning circles first one way then the other. Let go -thinking I'd won and had put her in her place. I started to walk off and she gave me a nasty hard look and took a step towards me. I'd had ENOUGH, I turned and rammed her, stiff armed (right into the shoulder area like Sally head butts her) I hit her hard enough to make her stumble and almost fall. I think stood right there, all tall and stiff and IN CHARGE. The fire was gone from her eyes. I reached out told her that we don't give horns, we give loves ... lifted her head up and put her chin on my chest and then stood and stroked her head (it's the posture I've seen them use with Sally after Sally has corrected them hard) She was back to her loving, sweet self. I just felt I needed to enforce my spot a bit more, so instead of heading straight to the house I walked past her the other direction, turned walked back towards her, did that get-out-of-my-way shove the cows give one another. (she moved back quickly) kept walking (one out looking for a charging shadow ;D) stopped got my cans and headed on to the house. When I got to the house I looked back. What I saw made me laugh. Sally Goodin had been standing chewing cud, watching the SHOW the entire time. As I watched from the deck SHE walked up to Abby and body slammed her (just like I had) It looked to be a sort of "what mom said gesture. Teen age hormones....got to love 'em. SO?? anything else I SHOULD have done? NOT DONE? ideas, suggestions? As I've said before I know ZIP about cows, I just handle them kind of like I train dogs (BUT...I have spent ALOT of time observing their behaviours between another and have started employing those when I can. They seem to understand them just as well coming from me, as another cow)
