Hey everybody. I know it's been a long time since I posted, but I check in from time to time to keep up with everybody. Here's the problem.
Camelia calved 2 weeks ago and everything went fine. Pretty little heifer angus cross. I will post pictures later. I have been milking twice a day and baby is with momma 24/7. Everything going great. Then yesterday I couldn't get Camelia to come in for milking. She was walking funny--like she was in pain. When I checked her out, I saw that her right rear quarter was enlarged. I thought, "OH NO! Mastitis!" When I milked the quarter, it was nothing but blood. I could only get a few squirts out. I put in a call to 2 vets and both of them told me it was mastitis. Probably coliform/e-coli. She is going to lose the quarter. The teat has already turned blue and is very cold. This all happened within a matter of hours. She was fine at milking time the night before. The main problem right now is that she has stopped eating and drinking and is definitely is pain. She has stopped producing milk and I have purchased milk replacer for the calf. I have given Camelia La-200 and penicillin and will continue to do so for the next four days. If she will start eating and drinking, I think she can beat this thing. However, the vet says cows often die from this before they have a chance to recover.
She looks so sad and so sick. She is laying down most of the time now. She was shivering last night with cold ears. She has diarhea, also.
Any input would be greatly appreciated. I am at my office in town right now. I will be leaving for the farm shortly and we do not have a computer there. I will have to check back in with y'all tomorrow.
Please pray for Camelia!
