These pictures were taken early last week. They only have a couple of hours of milk in their udders. These are the bovine that remain after we sold 3/4 of the milking herd.
My Quaff. Quaff (T871) came from the school farm when they sold off the herd two years ago. She was my second pick (Priscilla, who I got, was my first pick). Quaff to me is the ideal family cow. Dad says she gives too much though. lol She will be ten years old in mid-May. Her sire was one of our past herd bulls, Bountiful (Berretta X Brigadier). Not sure who her dam, Nissa, is out of. We need to get her transferred into my ownership at some point. Quaff has produced two bull calves for us so far. I know her daughter(s) at the school were quite nice, too. She is a purebred Jersey.
El Tigre-P was a herd bull. His sire was Myrher-P, a Norwegian Red bull. His dam was Shenekwa (Bush River Royal X Duncan) a purebred Jersey.
Space Cadet Toby (S.C...."Essie"). Essie (R773) was El Tigre-P's first offspring. She is 3/4 Jersey, 1/4 Norwegian Red. Her sire was 1/2 Norwegian Red and 1/2 Jersey. Her dam was our 90 point cow, Acorn (LesterXSilver Beacon). She will be 7 the beginning of May. She is currently dry and open. Her last calf, a bull calf out of a Jace X Impuls son, is a father himself at another farm. Essie has had a heifer (Dasha) and a bull (Little Bit).
Dagmar (R778). She is 3/4 Jersey, 1/4 Nowegian Red. She is another El Tigre-P daughter. She is out of Silhouette. Silhouette (SkyLineXBold Venture) was my show heifer/cow when I was younger. Dagmar has only freshened once. She has been dry for four years now. She'll be 7 in June. She has a birth defect that causes health issues. One half of her skull is smaller han the other half. She is three quarters blind in her eyesite (if not more) and was dried up as a one quartered cow. Her only calf was a heifer that died at about a week old out in the field.
Crucible (R789). Crucible was my show calf/heifer/cow. She went to the Fair the first three years of her life. Hasn't been since. She is a Paramount (7J442) daughter and Moulan’s (I'll have to look up her info...) daughter. Crucible just turned 6. Crucible has produced a heifer (Charlotte) and two bull calves to date. She is a purebred Jersey and was born the last evening we performed The Crucible at my college.
Guinevere (R790). No picture of Guinevere. She is not doing well. She is a purebred Jersey. Not quite 6 years old. She is a daughter of Hooligan (Londonderry daughter {Lester X Brigadier}) and Advent (1J2012). She has produced a dead bull calf and delivered a tiny heifer calf in January.
Nicolass (R794). Nicolass is a purebred Jersey. Another Acorn daughter (see Essie). Her sire is also Advent (1J2012). She had navel ill as a calf. We did not realize this until she was about 6-8 months old when we noticed the warped ankle on her left rear leg. When I was choosing show heifers from her age group dad kept suggesting her and then I would point out the leg. She has produced a heifer (Cassandra) and two bull calves. She will be 6 in July.
Cadence (R795). Cadence is a purebred Jersey. She is a daughter to Silhouette (see Dagmar) and a daughter of Clarion (1J432). Clarion is also Sigil’s sire (Sally’s cow). Cadence was another show heifer of mine. She has produced one dead heifer and one dead bull so far. I have high hopes for a live calf this week. She is due the 2nd to Mor (1J480). It will be retained irregardless of gender. She will be 6 in August.
From here on out, the births of these girls are chronicled in the back pages of this board.
Isadore (R816). Isadore is another purebred Jersey. Her birth is recorded in one of the pages way back in “The Family Cow” board. Midgimoo called the timing of her birth accurately from pictures of her dam Adia (Mor X Select) that I had posted. Isadore is another Paramount (7J442) daughter and another very ideal family cow. She delivered a bull calf out of Jace last March and is still producing over 4 gallons at over a year in milk. She just keeps going and going. She just turned 3.
This girl ought to look fairly familiar. This is a bad pose on Nala (R819). The permanent nerve damage has affected her stance, unfortunately, and this just shows it at its worst. Nala is a daughter of Nessie (Paramount X Sniper) and Brazo (7J563). Nala delivered a very large, dead bull calf this past summer and was down for three weeks post calving.. She will turn 3 in June.
Ruby (R821). Ruby’s name was picked out way back in 1982. Ruby is my first AI calf. Her sire is Pearl (2J39-Quicksilver Noble X ?), a herd bull that was collected in 1982 (the same year I was born). Ruby’s dam is Gabrielle (Haydn X Sniper). She is the only animal we aborted after the beef bull bred the herd. She, unfortunately, has not settled since. It would help if we actually AIed her though. lol She is 2 ½ at this point.
Magdaleen (R822). Magdaleen is 7/8 Jersey, 1/8 Norwegian Red. Her dam Amistad-P (El Tigre X Bold Venture) was polled, as was her sire, Missile-P (76J140?). Yet she arrived as a horned heifer. Magdaleen is due 5/2/09 with her first calf. She will be 3 in November.
Cinderella (R823). She simply would not cooperate for me to get a decent picture. Cinderella is a purebred Jersey. Her dam is Gadget (Advent X ?) and her sire was a test sire named Torch who never made it into the final line up. lol She is currently open and will be 3 in December.
Zeda (T029). Zeda is my girl. She was the last purebred Jersey heifer to be born at the school farm. She was born on 1/5/07, a mere 6 days before the herd was sold at auction. She is a Mor daughter out of a Pierrier daughter, Rhett. Unfortunately, I’m not sure who Perrier was out of, as he was a herd bull at the school farm. Zeda will calve within the next few days with her first calf. She is settled to Mariner (76J134). Zeda is 2.
R824. She currently is unnamed. If anyone has any suggestions feel free to fire away. 824 is a daughter to Argos (Jason {Jace X Myrher-P} X El Tigre-see above) and Mor (1J480). 824 is 7/8 Jersey 1/8 Norwegian Red. She will be 2 this August.
A group shot for this past summer’s heifers. There is one 7/8 Jersey, 1/8 Norwegian Red heifer in that group. She is R827. Her dam was Hermaine (Freedom X El Tigre) and her sire is Kenai (1J364 maybe?). The other 8 heifers in this pen are out of the stray beef bull from 8/07-12/07. I can tell you that the black heifer with the green weaner on the left is Twyla’s and the heifer with the weaning ring on the right is Circe’s I believe (or maybe Sigil’s). In any case, they have grown a bit in the past half of a year.
R837 and R836. 837 on the left is Guinivere’s (see above) heifer. Her sire is Gunner (29J3247 maybe). She is the first purebred Jersey heifer since Cinderella. The calf on the right is Shaylee’s (Haydn X El Tigre-P) heifer. Her sire is Lieutenant (1J506). She is 15/16 Jersey, 1/16 Norwegian Red.They are getting plump on all this excess milk we have. Both were born in 1/09.
Beyond those animals we have two other animals.
Sidsel’s(784) bull calf out of the beef bull. He is naturally polled and has never been touched by a human in his entire life. We lost his dam this past January. He will be heading to the Sale Barn this Saturday, hopefully! I am crossing my fingers he has not settled anyone yet, but it is quite possible he has bred the black heifer above.
This is Sally’s beef cow. She showed up as a stray from the Sale Barn back in November but now belongs to Sally.
Beyond these bovine we are currently at 146 head of goats with more overdue and due. Plus the 14 queens, the one tom cat and the litters of kittens around.
My Quaff. Quaff (T871) came from the school farm when they sold off the herd two years ago. She was my second pick (Priscilla, who I got, was my first pick). Quaff to me is the ideal family cow.
